In reply to what makes you a believer submitted by Dgennero on August 14 2000 05:21:57

Hi Dgennero,

If I were a Bible scholar, I might have a better chance at answering your questions with a lot of scriptural and historical referances. However, I am a mere student of the Bible....and a "not-so-mere" Child of God with a lot of faith. So, while I can answer your questions out of faith, and some knowlege, you may wish to read from more learned men than myself. I suggest "Mere Christianity" by the late C.S.Lewis. Although there have been many good "apologetic" books and papers written by other authors, I have found this particular one to be supperb. C.S. Lewis was anatheist, or agnostic (I cannot remember which, right now), until he reached a very logical conclusion, that the Bible and it's message, are true. He was not a man who would jump to conclusions, nor would he simply believe because others believed. He questioned everyhing he possably could about the Christian faith, and found that, not only is God very real, He loves mankind very much.

I needed some convincing at one point in my life, because I really did not know what to believe. I was trying to quit drinking, and my life was a literal mess, I had a real problem with a sexual orientation that, for all that I knew, made me into a "pervert". I just could not understand how there could ever actually be a loving, carring God for me....or for anyone else, for that matter. Then I found that book (among a few others) by C.S. Lewis, and I read and re-read the thing. All I can say is that, this old English Scholar and Writer, who was once one of the world's biggest un-believers and skeptics, really made a differance for me.

So, I truly hope this helps you as much as it did me. Give Mr. Lewis a try...see what you think. I'll tell you what, I am glad I did. Faith in an un-seen God is definately not an easy thing. Sometimes we do need to question the validity of it, and of it's source. God will provide answers for anyone who honestly looks, He is not insulted in the least. He wants us to question things, to find things out for ourselves, so that we may be convinced in our own minds and hearts. Because, after all, if you will ever love Him, you must first get to know Him.

Anyway, God Bless you in your search for truth!

Love in Christ Jesus,
Chris
