Chris:
Thank you for your correction. ALthought there is only one place in which John is referred to as being Jesus's age (in Luke) theological researchers have uncovered an ancient gnostic tribe, similar to the Manicheans, which is still alive today in Southern Iraq founded by who they believe is John the Baptist. And in their sect it is assumed that the Baptist was the forefather of Jesus, not a peer-aged contmeporary. Nonetheless I can't argue the Baptist was Jesus's adult friend, but if I had to speculate on someone within the gospels that is who it would be.
Also men-boy relations are not simply limited to adults and youths, but instead John, in an emotional sense, may have guided Jesus along his path to Christhood. Although a same-aged peer he nontheless would have taught him many things through his own baptism. Obviously John recieved a more formal beginning in religious zeal than did Jesus, as we see John active much earlier than Jesus, so in a pyscho-emtional sense John may have been much more matured than Jesus.
Anyway just some thoughts to play with on the search
God Speed
David
