What makes me so faithful? I'm not. But I grow in faith every time I see God answer a prayer (which, incidentally, is practically as often as I pray sincerely). The Bible is dependent on the views of a specific cultural environment? Well, yes... It's a historical document, describing the culture (and the God) of a particular nation at a particular time. Times and cultures have changed, but the God you read about in the Bible is exactly the same. Why these books in the Bible? hmm, I have to take that one on faith. God wouldn't let the wrong books get put together. Sorry I can't help more on that one. However, I do believe very strongly that the Bible is not yet complete. There will be more books written. Who decides that the Bible text is inspired by God? Decide for yourself. How else could they have been written? Let me explain... The most convincing thing in the Bible, to me, in favor of it being the word of God, is the prophecies. In the OT you see references to things God will supposedly do in the future, in vague terms but with specific detail. Then in the NT, written some 2000 years later, you see these events actually happen. How coule this possibly be the case unless God orchestrated the whole thing? This was only a small part of my decision to become Christian, however. The main reason was based on a feeling. One night I had been reading through my Bible, and frustrated that I couldn't make logical sense of it. It all seemed too good to be true, I couldn't believe it. I prayed: "God, I want to believe. Please, help me understand." Before I even finished my prayer, an incredibly wonderful feeling hit me in the chest and rushed through my body. I knew without a doubt that the Holy Spirit had just been given to me. I finished my prayer: "Wow, I guess I believe. Thanks. :)" |
