'The heart is deceitful above all things.' Whilst it would be nice to disregard all the rest of the wisdom of the years, it simply doesn't work; part of the consequence of our sinful nature is that we are too liable to deceive ourselves into believing that what we want to do is loving when it is not. Which is why God has added some outer limits to define our behaviour in addition to the primary principle. The application of the principle is in I Corinthians 5 onwards where Paul berates his converts for their acceptance of 'loving behaviour' which is contary to God's will. It fascinates me the way in which the secular world's standards have slipped over the past few decades as the church's standards have been less and less emphasised. Back in the 50s, it was generally agreed that mariage was the only place for sex. By the 60s, the cry 'If you really love him / her it's OK' had gained public acceptance. Now we are at the stage where sexual intercourse has the same inherent importance as a handshake - at least for much of the population. Sadly us humans can't be trusted to get it right without rather more specific guidance...... |
