Grasping for the wind,
I begin to descend. Down.
One last breath,
And I start to drown.
"Vanity of vanities; all is vanity."

All wins, all triumphs. Gone.
Everything that I gained. Lost.
"One generation passeth away,
And another generation cometh."

As my life's story plays back within my mind,
I see my failures, and I grieve my losses --
Even my victories.
What has been accomplished?
"Naked shall he return to go as he came."

As a child, I was taught facts.
As a layman, commandments.
And as I matured,
I learned to apply that which I was taught.
"Who is as the wise man?"

Yet, even with much wisdom,
My heart led me astray.
I did all that I desired,
Fearing not the Lord.
"The heart of the sons of men is full of evil."

I tried to find happiness,
But could find none anywhere.
Nothing I did brought me joy.
"What profit hath a man of all his labor?"

And I sought truth with all my might,
But I could not reach its entirety.
I scrutinized all that I saw and heard;
Still my heart was empty.
"He that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow."

How worthless to labor at impossibilities
And to seek what can't be found!
What a meaningless effort to give reply
To a question that can't be answered!
"That which is far off, and exceeding deep,
Who can find it out?"

Yet, I pursued to learn all things, inside and out,
Thinking I could know all things, within and without.
But none of this made me happy.
"The eye is not satisfied with seeing,
Nor the ear filled with hearing."

The foolish know not what they do --
They walk in darkness.
And the wise men keep blindly reaching --
Their light is focused within.
"As it happeneth to the fool
So it happeneth even to me."

God's law is soon forgotten
When our eyes rest on something else,
And we are quick to stumble
When we don't watch where we walk.
"Better is the sight of the eyes
Than the wandering of the desire."

And here I am, sinking down.
Nothing to show for, but what's in my mind,
And with me it dies -- with me it drowns.
"And how dieth the wise man?
As the fool."

Through my death, I pray you consider
The life you lead and the path you follow.
If it's not for God, then the goodness you do
Will neither be remembered nor rewarded,
And the evil you do will never be forgotten.
"For God shall bring every work into judgment,
With every secret thing, whether it be good,
Or whether it be evil."

"Fear God, and keep his commandments:
For this is the whole duty of man."
