That sense of guilt and "disassociation from God" is called conviction from the Holy Spirit. That is what the Holy Spirit is all about! He tells us what is wrong for us. When you have that feeling, you can know for certain that God is telling you the thing you are doing is wrong, and you should stop doing it - Holy Spirit conviction is a wonderful gift to keep us in line with the Lord's will! Follow it, and you will be greatly blessed. Ignore it, and you can reap the consequences.
