"I think if Christianity is ever going to be a religion for the modern world..."

I pray that it never is - it is not a 'religion' in that sense at all - it is all about the good news that we can live forever with our Creator, through the Lord Jesus Christ - it is a way of relationship with Him, by His rules, because He made us - not a way of how we can fit it conveniently into our culture or social schedule.

"...then it needs to dump the dogma of original sin"

It's God's dogma, or if you do not believe the Bible is God's word, then it most absolutely was the dogma of those who wrote the Bible, upon which Chrsitianity is based. If you do not accept the Bible, why even bother to accept Christianity at all? Who would want such a silly 'religion' that does not believe in its own God. Don't bother to modify Christianity to adapt it to the 'modern world' - just reject it outright if that is your desire. The Bible is all about God's plan to save His children. He shows us the way so that we can know Him and His love.

"The idea of original sin and a lot of behavior that fundamentalist Christians called sin, is rooted in a time when we had not even started to understand the human condition"

The idea of original sin is rooted irremovably in the Bible - its writers as well as the Holy Spirit who inspired them. Without it we have no need for God. For those who stumble at accepting the reality that we are separated from God by sin, there is no need for the message of Jesus Christ, that we can be reunited with God through faith in the life, death, burial and resurrection of the SOn of God. And if the message of being brought back into right relationship with God through Jesus Christ is not necessary because there is no original sin, then the whole message of Christ and the whole idea of following Him is unneccessary, and being a follower of Christ (a 'Christian') is merely a foolhardy flight of fancy. Without the dogma of original sin, there is no basis for meaningful Christianity. To reject the idea of original sin is to reject the purpose of God being invloved with us at all - really a dark and hopeless notion.

No, the Truth, which the Bible, thankfully, reveals to us clearly, is that we need God. Why? Because we are separated from His perfect holiness by our lack of perfect holiness. That is original sin. But God loved us so much, that He sent His own Son to die for us, so that if we will believe in Him, we will have eternal life. Thank you Lord Jesus for your gift of Life in Christ Jesus!
