The point that I was trying to make is that some form of religious intolerance is an inextricable part of some religions. This conflicts with the notion of "freedom of religion," which is one of the major tenets of the modern secular religion known as liberalism. The paradox of "religious freedom" is that those religious views that do not allow for freedom of religion are themselves restricted. In other words, to defend the religious freedom of some, it is necessary to curtail the religious freedom of others. And the decision-making for all of this is made on the basis of largely unexamined and unacknowledged prior commitments about the nature and role of religion in society. (whew!)

a few Christians over the centuries have considered it their religious obligation to kill all those who apostasize from the Church

And the anathema declared by St. John Chrysostom against all those who kill heretics still stands. (Sorry, M. Calvin!)
