Are two particular ways of getting to know people that I've used in the past. I've still some friends I've met through those routes.

But the main answer must be church - particularly one that has an effective small group system of people meeting in a home. One particular approach that many have found good is the Alpha courses that are now run in many countries - see the link for a listing near you! The concept is a informal gathering usually in a church over a GOOD meal where there is a basic input about the Christian faith, and then open discussion from anyone who is there. It is always the most fun to see the atheists demolish each others arguments..... Over the period of the course you get to know a small number of people quite well!
