As being so pleasant to live in - on the whole life elsewhere is not so stunningly comfortable that they are certain they've got it made on a physical level, so are tempted to ignore the spiritual. It is us comfortable westerners who can easily buy into the myth that the we don't need God because we've got it cracked. The most radical growth of a Christian church was probably South Korea where from almost zero, the church has grown to be most of the population as a country emerges from one form of oppression (Japanese colonialism) and struggles to resist another (Communist totalitarianism).
