The news that a group of North American 'Christians' living a culture that appears to regard sexual intercourse as virtually a right and whose churches are emptying at an accelerating rate have surrendered to the consensus is, whilst sad, not especially significant. As the Episcopal church appears to be unable to recognise when one of its bishops has become an atheist, that its grasp on other issues is equally tenuous is hardly a surprise. By contrast the early church had a very clear discipline, one which it maintained until it became the prevailing social orthodoxy of the cultures which it conquered, though often breached in practice of course. For two thousand years, the Eastern Church has believed that remarriage after widowhood is sinful, while the Western Church has disagreed. This is a new one on me - Paul in Corinthians clearly gives widows the option of remarriage - though only to a fellow believer. Perhaps Dirk can shed some light on this? |
