Sorry to ramble, but I have studied theology somewhat...

The point I am trying to make, is that although the laws in the Bible may be very good and telling us what is wrong with us when we sin, they are useless at fixing things. Just like a troubleshooting manual may tell you exactly how broken your computer is, but the manual itself can't do anything to fix the problem.

And sheer willpower and human effort can't make things right. The New Testament makes it very clear that people are incapable of pleasing God through their own efforts alone, no matter how hard we try. We can't be perfect, (or even half-perfect, alot of the time).

The answer that is given is this: Jesus. Jesus is SUPPOSED to do it FOR US. If we will just ASK him, he will HELP us, and MAKE UP FOR the things that we cannot do on our own. Jesus won't tell us that we can go out and do whatever the hell we want, but he will tell us that he understands our imperfections, and forgives our mistakes, and is willing to help us grow into being better people, and that he loves us and will never forsake us, no matter what.

Please take a look into the 12-steps model, such as is used by AA or other recovery groups. It is based on evangelical Christianity. The men who devised the 12-steps were Christians, and they based the whole thing on Biblical principles. (I would recommend the book, A Hunger for Healing, by J. Keith Miller. There is a place in this book where he even mentions adult-chlid sexual abuse as something that can be healed with this approach!)
