Catch-22 ?

Submitted by 194 on December 16 2000 15:18:13

Rape and sexual assault are deemed to be very serious crimes because they are (non-consensual) sexual acts - because sex is deemed so serious.

If sex wasn't so serious, rape and sexual assault wouldn't be so serious.

But because sex is deemed so serious, in order to consent to it *properly*,
it is deemed you really have to be an adult.

So what's an adult? The more serious and weighty sex is, the older the better, obviously. Maybe 18? (Maybe even 21??? ;-) )

Does the seriousness of sex derive from the seriousness of rape, or is it the other way around, I wonder? Catch-22?

I bet it's the other way around.
