CONTROL

Each man must make his own walk in life. Indeed, we find people in life who inspire us, yet we must still do the walk on our own.

Children, who are over-controlled, as you appear to have been, have learned things that are different from those that had less controlling adults in our lives - such as myself. Indeed, all chilren are "controlled" to some extent. As a baby, for example, we are totally dependent and must depend on someone to feed us and change our diaper. The caretaker is in total control over the (baby) child.

As children grow, they need to be permitted to take risks, and adults need to relinquish their control that they had over the child who was once a baby. Unfortunately, many adults control, in order to force a child to be something they may not be. For example, a child can be forced to play hockey and be pressured to be a hockey star, yet this is the parent's "lost" dream, and the child must do their own walk and follow his own dreams.

In the end, each person must make their own choices, and they must make their own walk in life. Based on my experiences, I have come to see that we are still like babies. Although we have control, there are "voices" (from our parents and society) that still can control us. We, of course, must listen to the voice deep within, the one that listens to God.

Because there is always this need to depend on someone, rooted in our beginning, I have learned to put this dependence on God, which helps to free me to do the walk that only I can do.

Best wishes on your journey,
~Once a Boy
