According to the way I personally understand sin, there are two kinds of sin: intentional and unintentional.

The intentional sins are the ones we are supposed to avoid as Christians. When we are conscious that we are being tempted, we have a choice to make, as to whether to give in to the temptation or not. If we deliberately choose to give in to our temptation, then we have sinned intentionally. That is not a good thing for a Christian to do. The more you practice fleeing from temptations that could lead you into intentional sinning, the easier it will get to be to avoid it.

However, untintentional sins are the things we do without even realizing until later that we have sinned somehow. God does not hold a grudge on these; they are forgiven instantly. The Bible makes it VERY clear that God DOES NOT punish people for sins committed in ignorance.

So, from a purely theological standpoint, Christians are still selfish sometimes, but we are only technically sinners if we choose intentionally to be so. If we do our best not to sin, and trust God to forgive the mistakes we do make, in a technical sense, we are "clear" and NOT sinners from God's point of view.

I hope this makes sense. This is the evangelical protestant view of sin, I think. (Doncha love the way I reply to my own posts? How self-absorbed is that? Am I a primadonna, or what? I guess it's the gay gene :)
