For me the past 12 months having this board - and emails from people I've met through it - have made an amazing difference; my relationship with the church IRL has largely collapsed, but here I've found some amazing support and encouragement. I must also admit that it has challenged my prejudices about Americans; previous experience had inclined me to the belief that they are universally shallow, with no original thoughts in their brains. I'm happy to say that the quality of SOME of what I read here has disabused me of the notion (not that there aren't a few, in the US AND elsewhere :-) Which is by way of reference to your own struggle with being a Yank in Ireland; us Europeans have a very confused relationship with super power over the water, and often we treat individual Americans badly as a result - which is totally racist of us (Can the Brits stop having to play the baddies now please!!) |
