A lot of Christians like to rest lazily in their salvation, but God calls us to strive for holiness, and we are often reminded that we will be rewarded for our works as Christians (whether they be for God or "naught"). Even Jesus says that if we love Him then we will obey His commandments (read all of John 15). These things wouldn't be asked of us if we weren't supposed to do them. Salvation is not party time. Yes, it's a reason to praise and celebrate, but then our work begins. It's selfish for us to think our life's purpose is to gain eternal life for ourselves, and nothing more. No, we have a work to do. We are to glorify God in all we do. If God has given us "talents" we are to use them for His purposes, and multiply them. The more holy we are, the more God can use us. The closer we are to God, the more we'll be able to know His will. How can we even ask God what He wants from us if we're not close enough to hear His answer? And if we're not living as if we desire to accomplish the Lord's work, why should we bother asking Him for any direction at all?
