Not everyone is out to get us, as you pointed out with the Pastor. I wouldn't worry about Bush too much either, he may be very conservative but the powers of the President are very limited, he doesn't make the laws (He can submit bills but that doesn't happen too often) and there's still a strong liberal presence in the government. I probably don't remember much about politics like that but maybe it's a side effect of not living in America anymore. I think the main instigator of the problem (being heightened paranoia about issues like BL) is the media. Before mass media sensationalising I don't think BL was considered a large problem or threat by people, but now that every isolated case of abuse is shoved into everyone's faces, people make the wrong assumptions. I'll do my usual make-an-example routine. 3,000 commercial airliners take off and land safely every day, there's about on average 4 to 5 crashes per year with the death tolls usually being in the hundreds per crash. The media doesn't start their reports with "Today many many jets are flying perfectly safe flights..." All you hear is "A plane crashed killing 250 people this morning." This causes a large number of people to have a fear of airlines, it's the main cause for such fear. Then there's road safety, every year half a million people die on America's roads, as opposed to the couple hundred that die in the air. I'm not trivialising people's deaths, just looking at the numbers. Car crashes are hardely ever reported on, because the media knows it's so frequent, no one would be interested. It is safer to fly than to drive, statistically speaking, yet so many people fear airlines and would rather drive, take trains or some other form of transport that is actually more dangerous. With our case, the newsmedia focuses on criminal abuse of children in their reports. Abuse is wrong and a terrible thing, we all know that and the whole idea of being a BL is being aware of that fact. Events like that make the topic more contraversial but no one's telling the general public that there's many many BLs and pedophiles that never commit crimes. So the problem is that the media makes people aware of a topic but they don't tell the facts (It's probably not intentional but it's unfortunate) and this is why a lot of people are in fact out to get us. |
