The doctrine seems sound to me if you buy the package to which it belongs. Perhaps I don't understand it, but here's what I recall from grad school: Jesus was born without original sin, and Mankind is infected by original sin at birth by and through the mother. Therefore, Jesus was born perfect by virtue of Mary having been born without original sin (via God's grace.) (Of course, this begs the question that if Mary could be conceived without sin via divine fiat, Jesus could have been as well, no?) This doctrine isn't necessary in the Reformed Tradition for many reasons, not the least of which is that "original sin" is a forensic doctrine grounded in the tenets of Covenant Theology. 300 |
