The cross is, to Christians, no longer a symbol of death but a symbol of victory over death. It also reminds us that God wishes to be a part of our lives and of our sufferings.

The clue about the economic status of Jesus' family comes not from the account of Jesus' birth but from the account of his presentation. The offering of turtle doves was typical of those in the upper part of the lower class or perhaps lower part of the middle class.

Joseph didn't take his family to pay taxes but to be counted in a census for the purpose of knowing how many people there were to levy taxes on. This wasn't an annual event.
