That would of course be one way forward. He may see nothing to get excited about, or he may panic and want to share the decision.

Or isn't that a realistic approach :-)

I'd encourage you to offer to work with the older age group; my own experience is that by focusing with contacts with older boys and avoiding the younger, my AoA has drifted upwards. You seem to be open to the older end anyway; it might be helpful to stick to that group and not the younger.
