Indeed, when we totally turn our backs on God, He brings us into the valley of darkness to show us that He loves us. It's a shame that you had to lose everything (job and family) in order to be enlightened. However, when something controls you to the degre you describe (viewing pornography at work!), then there is a problem. Many alcholics, sexaholics, and workaholics destroy families in much the same way and end up in the valley of darkness. Unfortunately, some people never rise up because people do forget about hope.
