Is the problem that there are two separate religions fighting for the title of 'Christian'; one is the historic faith that starts with God as the omnipotent, Holy one from whom we deserve only destruction, but who has given His son that we might have life. The other is a universalist faith in a weak God who is a bit like an ineffectual grandmother; she'll comfort us when we are down, and say lots of nice things about us regardless of what we do. But she can't really make a difference in our lives at the cutting edge, and really has no insight into what the real world is about. She gets a bit upset if we are rude about other members of the family, but is quite in favour of people who are critical of nasty outsiders. It is my experience of the church in my country that the grandma lovers are winning (the image of a grandmother is from a bishop), not least by preventing the rest of us from telling the truth about the god whom they worship (because it would be judgemental). |
