An Answer to the Unconcious Mind?

In reply to Dreams, meaningless offspring of idle minds... submitted by Altima on April 16 2001 20:08:38

I was looking up research on Lucid Dreaming, which is the ability to be aware while dreaming and have full control of the dream world (for more information look up www.lucidity.com) and in their FAQ they discuss the issue of dreams being messages. I quote:

Some people believe that dreams are messages from the unconscious mind and should not be consciously altered. Modern research on dreaming, discussed further in chapter 5 of  EWLD, suggests that dreams are not messages, but models of the world. While awake, sensory and perceptual information governs our model. While dreaming, our bodies are paralyzed and our brain builds a world model based on a secondary source; namely, our assumptions, motivations, and expectations. These biases are difficult to identify while awake, so a world based entirely on such biases, the world of dreams, can help us to recognize them. Thus, dreams are not messages, but are more like clues into the inner workings of our minds. The conscious and critical awareness that accompanies lucid dreams allows dreamers to thoughtfully interpret their dreams while they happen.

Well, maybe it's the fact that I'm not the most spiritual person in the world (it may sound strange, me saying that here, but that's why I came here in the first place, to figure things out) that makes me accept this explanation over a message explanation. Yes this part of my life is my dark little secret, I have no plans to change that, but these days I have been thinking less and less about the BL aspect of my life and now I just think about... my life. You may have noticed that my posts have become increasingly more detached from the issue of BL. Hmm, maybe someday I'll figure out the questions, so that future generations can think of the asnwers (kind of like in Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy)
