You ask why I subordinate myself to written texts. For the same reason I assume written records are accurate, when I know good and well that they could be horse-hocky. Why? Because I don't have anything BETTER to go on. Notice I didn't say "anything ELSE" to go on. There are times when archeology or other, more reliable texts conflict with the written texts I believe, and I have to question my beliefs. This goes for religious texts as well as more mundane things like who was king at what time, birth and death records from before the mid-20th century (and even today in some countries), and other secular recordings. Heck, I even take posts on BC at face value until they are proven to be bogus. And there's been more than one good liar who strung people along for awhile since BC was founded. This is one reason I discount "he's lying" posts without evidence or a credible source to back them up - they are less credible than the existing information. -d, david, d_fpc@operamail.com |
