or in more traditional theological language - 'it's something to do with the Fall', as a result of which creation is in a big mess. Humanity catches a lot of bad stuff as a result of the sins of others; sometimes that is the obvious consequences of sin in specific people's lives, but at other times it is not directly related to a specific person's sin. This logic provides an explanation for all the innocent suffering (e.g. earthquakes and illness) in the world, as well as our own particular experience. But in the context of the everlasting life with God which we have the prospect of enjoying, it is not terribly significant. (c.f Rom 8 v 18).

Which is not to minimise the amount of struggle that we do have to put up with....

An added feature of this approach - which sees being a BL as a form of disability - is that it allows a certain response to the hard line evangelicals who demand that we are cured of the orientation as a part of being a Christian; they have to be able to heal everyone in a wheelchair. If they don't have the faith to do that - without faith from the person in the wheelchair - then they can't put the screws on me. (Incidentally the gift of healing is not mentioned in I Cor 13 which is the passage usually misquoted to allow Calvinists not to have to demonstrate their faith, as indicated in Mark 16 v18 - and it also winds up Jehovah's Witnesses as well...)

Anyway - I hope that offers a few lines of discussion for the weekend...
