the bit I don't understand is why only some 25 year olds excite me, whereas most 12 year olds I'll consider good-looking. Why do I have to have known and liked someone when they were a youth to be able to like them in their manhood?

I'm finding this to be true also. The thing that seems to keep me attracted to a 12 year old who is now 20 (or older) is remembering who they were when they were younger (the fun-loving personality, the wit, how they looked, things they said, etc). I think it has something to do with knowing the person as a boy, and knowing that the "boy" is still a part of that person. Also, a lot of their mannerisms are the same. The way they walk, move their hands, use their eyes, facial expressions, laugh, etc. All these things reflect the boy they once were and bring back all kinds of memories for me. I think that's why the interest and attraction remain for me. Plus, the fact that I care about them for many other reasons because of experiences we've shared throughout the years or in the past.
