Unless one is speaking of ethics in a legal sense, as in the professional ethics of say, doctors, then there really is no difference between ethics and morality. And even in the case of professional ethics, it's really only a matter of codification rather than any real difference. Can you name one thing, other than your supposed dilema, where an action can be called "ethical" but not "moral?" In your case, let me ask you also, what choice do you think the lawmakers had but to say, "no religous teaching?" As lawmakers in a supposedly pluralistic democracy, constrained by both the constitution and by the idea of simple fairness, they cannot possibly allow anyone to preach their own brand of religion to children in such a vulnerable situation. If you want to, or cannot do without, preaching, then find yourself a church-sponsored orphanage, one that is not paid for by tax dollars. Tax dollars that I, a non christian, am compelled by law to pay. And even if you do find a church sponsored orphanage, there is no guarantee that they'll allow you to preach either. The main home for abused children in my city, for example, is run by the Methodist Church, but they allow no preaching at all, perhaps recognizing that the teaching of values--and of love--is not dependant upon a particular creed. I'm thinking that you ought to take note of that. There is no reason you cannot teach them to be good and loving people without pushing Christ on them. And what value would such a conversion be anyway, if they had nothing to compare your christianity to? Finally, if you are caught preaching you will be fired, depriving both yourself and the children you are with whatever gain there is from your helping them. Is that what you want? RDL |
