I agree with those who advise you to love those kids. Love never fails. When I was in college, I worked in a juvenile detention center. These were kids who were REALLY in trouble. I made it a point to love those kids with kindness when I could, and not be judgmental with them. I found more than one opportunity to share my faith. At one point the director callled me in to his office to discuss this. He was concerned that I was violating the "separation of church and state." Fortunately, in each case the kids had asked me about why I acted the way I did, which allowed me to share what made the difference in my life, that difference being Christ. The director had no problem sharing my experience as long as I wasn't using my position to proselytize. Separation of church and state doesn't mean you can't mention God in a secular setting. It does mean you can't use a secular position to proselytize. |
