I was able to do some research today at the Greek Festival held at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral here in town. Apparantly, in the west, the "filioque" clause was added to combat Arianism. After Arianism ceased to be a threat, the Eastern churches objected to changing the Nicene Creed and it bacame the main focal point of the differences between East and West.
