This is, of course, standard Hindu and Buddhist teaching - but wasn't acceptable to the liberal establishment. I don't agree with his belief - but I will defend his right to state it....

First of, this is NOT standard Buddhist teaching. And I ought to know.

Second, do you not see the contraction in this? No-one is saying that you do not have the right to say or believe what you want, no matter how completely illogical or idiotic--or in this case, no matter how utterly insulting it is to the very idea of God--what we are saying is that you do not have the right to impose this belief on other people.

Your belief that "God" may come down in his chariot or whatever and smite the homosexuals or whatever it is that patriarchal gods do--is not proveable by empirical means. This is in contrast to stealing, for example, where the harm of it to individuals and society is quantifiable. Therefore society has no business curtailing the rights of homosexuals, but has every obligation to halt the activities of thieves. If homosexuality is a sin, then it is a matter between the sinner and his god; and none of your damn business.

You really ought to read On Liberty, by J. S. Mill. On the other hand, he's one of those pesky liberals, the original Liberal, actually. So you might not be able to stomach it.
