In reply to The Proof that God Exists Within Us.. Potentially. submitted by Solid~Air on September 3 2001 22:07:03

I'm playing devil's advocate in this thread :). I am a Christian and I believe in God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Ghost. But I question people who attempt to evangelize using weak or incomplete arguements, so I force them to question them head-on.

I've known plenty of people who on the outside did all the things a good Christian should do, but who did not have Christ in their hearts.

Ergo, acting like Christ would have us act is not proof that Christ exists.

On the Biblical quotes:
They are very compelling, perhaps even "proof" in a court-of-law where the threshhold of "beyond a reasonable doubt" applies, but when I said "proof" I mean a higher standard - the standared of "absolutely, undeniably true" - like you can prove water contains hydrogen.

The book Evidence That Demands A Verdict by Josh McDowell proves to the "beyond a reasonable doubt" level that Jesus, The Father, and the Holy Spirit are God. It is a very good book. But there are still those who will hold to the sliver of doubt that available to those who demand an absolute proof.

One more thing - you can't use something to prove something else until you've proven the first thing, or at least convinced your audience to take it as an axiom. You can't use passages in the Bible to prove God exists until you've established that the passage in question is true.

Don't forget that most people here are Christians, and at least agree with the spirit behind the Bible, even if they don't take it word-for-word literally (and anyone who does take it word-for-word better be using the original languages and understand them in their historical contexts, and allow for transcription error over time).
