Starting in the late '70s, a conservative mover and shaker in the Southern Babtist Convention decided to try to move and shake himself and like-minded thinkers to the top of that organization. He borrowed tactics used within political parties to engineer a conservative takeover of that organization. And you wonder why the SBC is so good at playing politics? I can't speak for other Christian groups. In general though, I suspect politically powerful religious organizations are like trade organizations and trade unions - those at the top ask for input from anyone willing to give it, make a decision based on that input and their own thoughts, then ask the rank and file to back them as a bloc. That bloc is a very powerful political force. I'm not in favor of Madylin Murray O'Hair and am certaintly not an athiest (or is that "Athiest"?), but I will hand the athiest organization he led for many years this: They too knew how to play politics. They also knew how to use the courts. -d, david, d_fpc@operamail.com |
