"Maybe it's a test for humanity, see if it can keep the faith, so to speak without dramatic devine intervention." A related idea has been the leading theory among Christians who have discussed this ("Faith in Christ is enough; God doesn't think we need dramatic interventions any more"). I must admit that I'm skeptical. I think that something went drastically wrong with Western culture toward the end of the Middle Ages (a friend of mine blames Aristotelianism), which led to Deist tendencies: the belief that the supernatural never intervenes in our lives. I think that if God's sending these subtle messages, he's simply finding a way to keep communication channels open that Westerners are doing their best to close. :) "Perhaps, and this is pure raw speculation by someone only finally admitting to himself the possability of God's existence" As someone who is finally admitting to herself the possibility of God's non-existence, I'm an expert at raw speculation. :)
