A related idea has been the leading theory among Christians who have discussed this ("Faith in Christ is enough; God doesn't think we need dramatic interventions any more"). I must admit that I'm skeptical. I think that something went drastically wrong with Western culture toward the end of the Middle Ages (a friend of mine blames Aristotelianism), which led to Deist tendencies: the belief that the supernatural never intervenes in our lives.
