What are you looking at?

"What?," he said.

I realized that I had been looking at him for a long time and not talking.

"Oh. I just can't get over how much you've grown. When I think about you, I always think of you as being seven years old..."

I had the same thing happen to me. One day when I went back to visit my ex-girlfriend at the home we both owned, she told me that her son was in the backroom (meaning that she thought he would be happy to see me). When I saw him, he was lying on a couch, wearing nothing more than white denim shorts. It was August. His skin was tanned and his hair had turned a bright-golden shade of blond. It had been a couple months since I'd last seen him, and I noticed that his muscles were starting to show and he had lost much of his "baby fat." I'll never forget that day and the way he looked. No other boy could compare. I looked at him from bottom to top -- starting with his feet and then looking up toward his dark-blue eyes. He smiled and asked me, "What are you looking at?" I realized that I had been looking at him for a long time. Usually I didn't stare at him like that, and certainly not while he was watching me. So I snapped out of it and said, "Oh, I was just thinking about how much you've grown." And I was being honest -- I will always think of him when he was 10 or 11 -- we had a lot of fun and shared some of the best memories then.
