But he couldn't love me that way (or should I say, that deeply and unconditionally), and it became a source of great heartbreak for me.

How sad. When you finally found someone who was interested in you and wanted to be close to you, he was not able to meet you on that deeper level where you really needed it. I will just assume that it was because he was so young, and probably not mature enough to understand and shoulder committment in a relationship.

It is true that we all need that kind of human connection somewhere in our lives. I feel sad and angry everytime that I hear about another boy growing up lonely and alone, because I know about the pain that goes along with that. I also had a few friends who I thought were going to be the one to meet me and fill up the need inside me - but wound up becoming a heartbreak.

I was fortunate, eventually. At 15 I met a Scout leader who became a mentor to me. He taught me life-skills and encouraged me to excel. He also taught me to appreciate myself. Many people would be horrified to learn that he also had sex with me; but I think that by giving me that human connection that I needed and lacked, he may well have saved my life.

Thanks for sharing that part of your life, Lynx. I am curious how you finally came to terms with the pain and loneliness. It is good to hear that you can now be a positive influence in the lives of boys.

Peace,
Nate
