"I've had a string of relationships like this. They always end within a couple months."

That sounds like my college days. :) However, I have to disagree with you about God pairing everyone off from birth. That seems to go against what Jesus said about marriage not being appropriate for everyone. He himself did not marry, and a number of his disciples didn't either.

While not wanting to bar all possibilities for the future, I have to say that I think it's *always* a bad idea to go into a relationship with another person with the intent of it being a romantic one. Romances that have a solid base of friendship are far superior, because you have a period where you aren't letting your hormones drive you. If it turns out that friendship alone is all that the relationship will be - terrific. One can't have enough friends in life. And if you're worried about loneliness, you might keep in mind that history is filled with plenty of examples of "couples" who were simply platonic friends who spent their lives together.

The trouble is, of course, that you need to make it clear to the other person that you're not necessarily going to enter into a romantic relationship with them. But in this day and age, when male-female friendships are so common, that shouldn't be unduly difficult (depending on where you live). You just need to avoid activities that have a romantic association with them, such as dancing (unless you're the type who's so passionate about dancing that you'd invite one of the lads to come along with you). Try inviting your female friends to rake leaves with you or some other nonromantic activity.

For that matter, try inviting your male friends to do this as well. The more friends you have, the less likely you are to make mistakes out of a desperate search to ease the loneliness, and the more likely you are to recognize Miss Right if she comes along.
