Dear Chris, Indeed, music is an awesome witnessing tool and I will pray for the young man whom you are sharing the Gospel with. It’s a shame I couldn’t lend you some from my collection – I have close to two hundred Christian tapes/CD’s that range from rock to hard metal. I haven’t followed closely the Christian metal scene in quite a few years (or the secular scene for even longer) and I have not heard of the band Sevendust. As such, I checked for a website and found it (see link below) and after looking through the ‘About’ section and some of the lyrics from their latest album ’Animosity’, have concluded that they are definitely not Christian. For example: “What you see in me, a motherfucker without a life that’s always getting’ somethin’, what you see in me, I got a life – you get a life and show me somethin’ “ from a song entitled “Tits on a Boar”. The first single from the CD is called “Praise” and has the following advertisement for agnosticism: “Who really knows what’s the truth” and the lyrics: “praise like the devil”. Then there’s the song “Crucified” with the following: “Don’t you feel like a bitch, don’t promise shit you’ll never be… don’t you feel like a shit”. And finally, the song “Live Again”, instead of pointing one to Jesus for salvation, points the listener inward to make change: “If you don’t change you’ll be nothin’, so look at yourself and live again.” When I first became a Christian, music was the only thing I had since I was not allowed to go to a church and I found the Bible too intimidating to read. And you are absolutely correct; any musical medium can be used to praise the Lord and as such is “Soul Music”.
