I'm enjoying the Potter books (the movie was fine, but it felt rather like you were watching the story in fast-forward).

I don't agree with the other Christians who say we mustn't watch it because it's occultic. I agree with you, that's silly. The story's pure fantasy, no more inclined to lead children to satanism than any fairy tale is, or than Shrek is, say.

That said, I feel I can tell the author's not Christian, not like C.S.Lewis. There are some "Christian" aspects I suppose, like the way Ron is ready to sacrifice himself for the others during the chess match. But at the same time there is a kind of brutality to Harry. Like in his conflicts with Malfoy, you get the impression Harry really would care for him to "go to hell", just subtle stuff like that. More so in the second book than the first, I haven't got to the last two yet :) It's a kind of selfishness in Harry that makes me uneasy. Though he's kind to his friends, but what about his enemies?

But "occult training material"? Codswallop! I imagine real witches find the portrayal of magic in the Potter books to be as much quaint and amusing as anything else.
