Ben, I know you received a lot of great responses. I just read your post and want to know if I could add my "two cents worth."
I have been working with kids as my church for almost 20 years. I serve on a local board of an international childrens ministry. Everyone has always commented on how I "connect" with the kids, (boys all, by 'coincidence')
First of all, I believe that God gave me the gift of empathy and compassion for a reason. I was told I am a "thearaputic listener." Too many kids need people like that in their lives. I don't doubt for a minute your attraction to this boy. I believe the Lord brought him into your life...and you into his for a reason. I believe this child need to be accepted and receive unconditional love! You asked about God testing you. Maybe God is hoping that He can bring this wonderful boy into your life and see how you handle the relationship. I would thank God for the boy, and then totally commit the relationship to God and ask God to put up a "hedge of protection" around both you and the child. That the two of you could function very appropriately, that the boy could know he is loved, and that you would know the bounderies of the love you can give him, and know what "lines not to cross." All people, especially kids need to know they are loved, they are special, and they are wanted. I have told the boys I interact with that God has given a special gift to me. That they are not just a kid, but I see them as the wodnderful, miraculuous creation He intended them to be.
I pray that you and this boy could have a wonderful, safe, and fulfilling relationship, and that, most of all, like any relationship, you committ it to Christ and ask Him to "be the lamp unto your feet...and direct your path. This child can't afford to be rejected by someone special, nor can be be "misused" by someone he cares for and trusts.
Hebrews 6:10, 11 tell us "Our God is not unjust. He will not forget the love you show Him, and be diligent to the very end to make your hope sure." That is from the NIV, and I didn't have my Bible in front of me so it may not be "exactly perfect" but it IS very close.
God Bless you brother, and may be bless and protect the relationship with this young boy. May the boy see Christ through you!
