Hi Jack, Personally, I wouldn't ASK because it draws attention to the fact that you are uncomfortable about it. In my church, we are teaching children to be physically affectionate in appropriate ways and at appropriate times. We believe that an outward gesture of affection (ie - a hug) can really help some people feel loved. So, hugging at church and affection with any boys at church is so commonplace that I don't even have to address it. Outside of that context, if a child would sit on my lap, I would generally give them a 'squeeze' of affection and then put them to my side. Even though I'd rather have them spend the whole day on my lap, I believe that this action acknowledges their gesture of affection, reciprocates, but then also establishes a boundary. If you did this in your situation, I think that the parents would think highly of it. Just a thought from the guy who has too many opinions :-) You are not alone. Love, Ben |
