Hi J,
I'm sorry I didn't see your reply down here. Maybe even you wont see mine. I do understand your desire for answers. Your wisdom will tell you whether pursuing the answers are the right thing to do.

But only God can forgive sins, and so whether a sinner repents or not is only for God to judge.

In Matthew 18:22 as you noted, Jesus answered, "I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times." Presumably Jesus meant an unlimited number of times and was just coming up with a big number. To me, a big piece of forgiveness comes from understanding that God forgave ALL of my sins and sent his own son to do it. His sacrifice was greater than mine will be when I forgive someone and the number of sins will be greater as well. If we are to imitate God, we have to strive towards being at least a forgiving.

In another example, the one of the Samaritan woman, Jesus didn't go into any detail at all about why the woman had five husbands. He just said, "Go away and stop sinning".

I guess this was where I was coming from. Then again maybe the digging into the WHY helps you to resolve and forgive, or it helps another to repent.

You are not alone.

Love,
Ben
