JohnQ is absolutely correct and many other scholars agree that the early Christians tried to distance themselves from the pagans all around them by their style of living.

There was a cause and a fundamental "why" for their doing this: the early Christians and their teachers the Apostles understood Grace. When Paul and the others wrote so enthusiastically in the Bible about God's Grace, they bubbled over with it because they had been so close to it, to Jesus.
The Didache ("didactic") teaches the distinctiveness of the Christian life, with Grace always in the background, with Grace always as the foundation.

Those Ten Commandment crusaders, those who bash the gays with Bibles, those who try legislating morality have forgotten that before Jesus left earth, He gave us the Holy Spirit -- that is, our conscience -- to guide our life choices while we try to spread His Grace.

"What I Always Wanted To Know About Grace" and other books by Phillip Yancey can help with your understanding of God's Grace.

I may be a BL. I may be gay (a YF suggest we use "samers" and I agree). WHATEVER it is I am, I am still and a-l-w-a-y-s s-a-v-e-d by God's Grace!

As Always,
