Even those who have risen to incredible wealth, fame and success have eventually fallen, realizing that all of those things did not make them happy. Phil 4 12 I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. 13 I can do everything through him who gives me strength. In this passage Paul reminds us that contentment does not come from our circumstances as much as how we view our circumstances. You can just as easily be rich and unhappy, as you can poor and happy. In fact, most people who report being happy are relatively poor (though not devastatingly so). It is no wonder in Matthew 19 that Jesus told the rich young man to go sell everything. The man asked Jesus, "What do I still lack?" (v. 20). He knew well that something was missing. Like you, I am a six figure guy and from the outside you would guess that I have it made.
