to Forgiven's very full description of the varieties of responses a variant on #3 (Medieval Catholicism): Reformation Catholicism in which good deeds done within the framework of the church is what gets you into heaven. By the time of the reformation, things had gotten so bad, they had "banking" societies wherein accountants kept track of how many times someone recited the Rosary, paid a priest to say Mass, or plunked a thaler in an indulgencve box to their credit and how many sins they commited to their debit. And as long as you had a positive credit, either you'd get into Heaven right away, or you would spend that much less time in Purgatory, since the Muslims knocking on Vienna's door not being of the correct faith were obviously going to Hell.
One guy who had a credit balance of 12,000,000 years got hanged for embezzlement.

A subvariety of this is Hollywood theology in which all you have to do is one good deed even after death to get in.
