The Greek word "malakos" means soft. It is used in Matthew 11:8 in reference to clothing: "But what did you come to see? someone in softs (the Greek here is plural) having been clothed? Behold the ones wearing softs are in the houses of kings." In I Cor 6:9, "malakos" is in the middle of a list of sexual sins: "not fornicators (literally "pornoi" the masculine of porne, prostitute), nor idolators nor adulterers nor malakoi nor sodomites (literally men f***ers) and the list goes on. Related to malakos is the word "malakia" softness, weakness, often used to refer to a "softening" disease. As far as the vast differences in translation, much of this depends on the translator, rather than the original word of God. Often the translator has to try to figure out what the meaning is and like most scholars, different translators will have different ideas.
