Something I failed to mention - when a Roman would discuss homosexual relations or activities he probably would have assumed at least a probability of pederasty. And note that I'm not talking about pre-pubescent boys, but sexually mature, but beardless youths. Apparently Julius Caesar didn't start to shave until he was in his very late teens or early twenties and appartently this was normal. Physical maturation used to take longer than it does now.

If anyone is curious as to why I say Caesar's full maturity happened so late, I can provide sources and rationale.

It's amusing to note that if a Roman looked down on anything more than pererasty, it was same age homosexuality - which was just about the biggest taboo possible.

At least with an age difference, a Roman man retained some of his dignity. If he were sleeping with a man his own age, then he was looked down on in the worst possible way.

The Greeks held this view to a much smaller extent. But even for Hellenes, a man having sex with a man his own age seemed at the very least extremely odd.
