Hey tigris,
In response to your question about enjoying non-boy activities, this is something that I have thought alot about. There are some things that I really do enjoy, apart from boys including listening to music, being very active (a good run, swim, or game of soccer), reading a great book and landing a great account in my work (part of my work involves sales). While all of this stuff is probably alot healthier than obsessing over boys, none of it motivates me to do really unique and meaningful work the way that my work with boys can. I think that your point about being balanced is great --- I have found myself in situations working with boys where the obsessing becomes destructive. I remember working at a summer camp many years ago, where I fell very much in love with a boy who was not in my cabin. My obsession became so great that I ended up in his cabin when I should have been watching my own kids. The relationship became overwhelming, to the point where I needed to be with him every moment. I can remember a day that he went on a canoe trip that I wasn't part of. It was just one day, yet I sat and cried all day because I missed him so much. I was only 17 years old -- had no idea what was going on in my life at that point.

Okay, sorry now I am rambling :-)

I am trying, in my work with boys, to choose things that will not put me in such an awkward position. Working with smaller groups of boys is better because I can naturally be more intimately involved with them, and not have to watch from a distance. I have found that the more I get to know a boy and the less I feel that I have to fight for the time together, the less obsessed I get.

You are not alone.

Love,
Ben
