"My impulse was to find out why they hate us..."

They hate us because we support Isreal. They hate us because of our presence in the Arab part of the world. They hate us because we don't believe as they do. And they hate us because of how we live.

I am not so naive as to think that all our involvement in foreign countries is purely altruistic. The conflict in Kuwait was more about the flow of oil than helping a small country overcome a bully. But I honestly believe the main goal in the current conflict is to curb terrorism.

In a discussion about how to deal with terrorism, I was given this example. If someone comes to your door asking for your support in a non-violent way of dealing with terrorists, punch him in the face. When he recovers and asks why you did that, punch him again. Then when he gets back up and suggests a dialog on what the problems are that led you to violence, punch him again. When he eventually leaves and seeks sanctions against you in the form of police action, send your friends after him and punch him some more and tell him you will punch him even harder if he doesn't drop all charges and stop supporting what he believes in. This is basically what terrorists are doing to us on a larger scale.

In my opinion, the only nonviolent means os stopping the current terrorism is to stop supporting Israel, pull everyone out of that part of the world, become an isolationist country and not interact at all with other countries, and convert the whole US to Islam. That MIGHT satisfy them enough to stop killing us. But then there would be some other group who didn't like what we did and start killing us again till we changed to what they thought we should be.
