One of my greatest joys this last year has been making friends with a young Muslim boy. He's always saying nice things about me in front of other friends, and when he's with his parents. He calls me his "good friend" and sometimes his "best friend." He is the nicest kid, and one of the smartest I've met. He has a strong work ethic, and I believe he has a ton of potential to do something great. But as a Christian, I can't get over being sad that he doesn't know Jesus like I know Jesus. This kid is wonderful. Am I truly to believe that he won't make it to heaven? There are a lot of things we could argue about (he and I), but I choose not to see those things as important, instead living my life as an example to him, hoping that somehow he will be influenced by it, and then someday find his way to Christ because of it. So often we choose to not get involved with people "different" from us because of small differences, when really we have SO MUCH in common. When will "we" ever learn?

Find a friend who is so different from you, you can't believe how much you have in common. Love them. Let them love you. Surprise people in gentle ways, as friends do. The rest of us will try harder too. Make our family proud. -Naomi Shihab Nye
